September 28, 2016 – See You Real Soon?

I’m terrible at saying goodbye.  I’ve never been good at it, never liked doing it, never really learned how to do it.  And that’s big picture stuff too – I’m the worst when death is involved, the very ultimate in goodbyes.  But I’m also quite a mess when it comes to something as simple as coming to the end of a holiday.

And so I was remiss in all efforts to say ‘see you real soon’ on the Disney Magic cruiseship last night and this morning.  The cruise staff did their traditional farewell, a musical sketch comedy piece entitled “If I Were Not Upon The Sea….”  Various cruise members imagine their lives off the ship in various occupations that create a Rube Goldbergian T&A base humor assembly line of grabs and punches.  Derrell kicked it up a notch as a golden haired tennis pro and stole the show… no easy feat when the Cruise Director is in some skimpy blackjack dealer outfit and another staffer is literally flashing the audience in her bikini.  And yet as the night wore on, I opted not to say goodbye to some folks who were so good to Mom and me on the ship… instead, I just faded away into the background, into the night, into the harbor itself this morning as we steamed into New York City.

We’re sitting in our hotel not too far from Central Park at the moment.  We caught a matinee of “Holiday Inn” a new restaging of Irving Berlin classics that somehow also underscored the passage of time in a sweetly romantic and yet still melancholic manner for me.  Maybe I’m just feeling sentimental and saccharine and out of sorts.  I didn’t run this morning albeit we hoofed it up and down Broadway.

We’ve got a few days here in NYC before I head out to Utah for the St. George Marathon this weekend.  I figure that will mark the return of daily posts but I’m not yet ready to say goodbye to the radio silence… even if I occasionally throw down a few lines here and there on my laptop.
