7th Day in Paradise – The Voyage Home

September 6, 2016 – 7th Day in Paradise

Fifty years ago today, Star Trek premiered on NBC. I say this because the then 5-year mission for the crew of the starship Enterprise has since stretched to ten times that amount and will continue for many more years to come. They continue to boldly go… As I hope to do.

This is my last morning in Kauai. I went for a slow 10 mile run, treading the same path I’ve logged the past few days. But each new sunrise brings about the world anew. And today’s was no exception. So without further ado, the dawn:

Mom and I packed up our stuff from room 115 at the Castle Mokohina. We loaded up and made a final trek out to the Wailua Falls of Fantasy Island fame for a different perspective. We split an Ono wrap and then I dropped Mom at the airport for her 2pm flight.

I’ve been killing time until my flight tonight. Lounging in the beach, reading the Harry Potter play that reads more like Back to the Future meets Potter fanfic. There’s worse ways to spend a last day.

All that is old is new again… And all that is new is old again. There’s a line in Star Trek II, a Captain’s Log voice over added late in post production, that runs as James T. Kirk gazes on the Genesis planet, a newly formed world that serves as the final resting place for his first officer and friend.

‘There are always possibilities’ Spock said. And if Genesis is indeed ‘Life from death’, I must return to this place again.

I’m in a bit of a melancholic mood, not uncommon as a holiday winds down… Even when another adventure looms ahead… But I am reminded that I will someday return to this place, a garden island filled with the spirt of Aloha. It’s good for my soul. I hope it’s been good for my Mom — I’ve enjoyed sharing this place with her and I hope she and my brother will come back with me before long.

These are the voyages…
