Hail Hydration!

Editor’s Note: Delayed Post From June 17, 2016:

Yesterday I thought I was being smart by breaking up my run into two shorter distances. I ran a 5 miler in 47:01 and drank a bottle of water, then came home to have some Powerade and cool off. Went out for another 5 miler that found me struggling a bit and finishing up with a 51:38 minute run. Again, more water, more powerade. I thought I was being careful.

But around 7 PM it hit like a tidal wave of nausea. The old adage about when you feel dehydration hit it’s already too late is oh so true. Light headedness, chills, the body shutting down in weird ways — check, check, check. It had been some time since I was that dehydrated and I should’ve known better. I spent the night trying to drink as much water and Powerade as possible to get back to some semblance of equilibrium, of homeostasis. Even this morning I’m still way under-hydrated.

I underestimated my water needs and went for too many miles in too much heat. I paid the price. I’m opting out of running today and trying to reset. Sometimes you really should listen to your body… and if you try and ignore it, the body WILL be heard one way or another. Far better to listen to it sooner rather than later.

Bottom line: Do what Captain America apparently does in the comics these days:
