February 22, 2019 – An Inevitability

Looking back, it was probably inevitable.

The Cowtown Marathon offered a challenge of running a shorter distance on Saturday and their marathon on Sunday.  I had ticked the box when I registered for the 26.2 mile race that I’d be interested in hearing more about the challenge.

Cut to this week when I received a “Countdown to Cowtown” email.  I couldn’t recall if I had signed up for Saturday or not and sent a sheepish note to the race director telling her I was embarrassed at not knowing whether I was or was not running.

Her reply is as follows:

Good Afternoon Kevin,
Please don’t be embarrassed, it happens to all of us! I show you are only registered for the Full Marathon. You can still register for the 10K or even the 5K through the online registration. We’ve got some great Swag for the Cowtown Challenge so I hopeyou’ll decide to add a Saturday race. Just make sure that your name and birthdate match exactly and you will automatically be entered in the Challenge.
Safe travels to Fort Worth and thanks so much for supporting the 2019 Cowtown Marathon!

I debated for an hour or so.  It was a late registration and therefore pricier than it could’ve been.  But as I have been a bit lazy on my mileage I thought perhaps a tune-up 10k might be in order.  And so, in an entirely predictable turn of events, I’m registered to run on Saturday at 7 am.

Delays courtesy of a Southwest Airlines software glitch ground stop, a Southwest mechanics dispute with aircraft maintenance issues, and weather IN the Southwest meant I had less time to deal with packet pickup than I would’ve liked.  As I had dinner plans with some most favorite Texans, time was short, so it looks like I’ll need to be at the Will Rogers Coliseum at 6 AM tomorrow morning for race day pickup.  It’s another early morning ahead then… but I wouldn’t have traded the dinner with Jean and Larry, so, no regrets… well, maybe a little regret at that last forkful of goat cheese cheesecake… oh, who am I kidding?  That last bite was just as inevitable as my running tomorrow.
