I still can’t figure out if it’s New Year’s Day or New Years Day. I think it’s possessive — The Day that Belongs To The New Year. I’m going with that but it’s like my ongoing inability to decide if it is supposed to be Season’s Greetings or Seasons Greetings. I think it’s again supposed to be the Greetings of this Season. But, man, I don’t know.
I found myself thinking about that during my 19K this morning. I had it in my head to run one as a proper kick off for 2019. And I got around to it… eventually. I wasn’t recovering from some massive late night New Year’s Eve rager. Far from it. I seem to be fighting a narcoleptic strand of depressing mononucleosis. That’s not confirmed, not even by WebMD/Dr. Google. That’s just what I’m calling it. I seem to be impossibly exhausted at all time regardless of sleeping hours.
In any case, I eventually did get out the door and pound the pavement… ever slower I might add… to reach my 19K goal. As has been the case for the last few months, my left leg does not like to run and feels a bit wobbly as I stride. It’s fine walking so I occasionally find myself shuffling along, seconds stretching into minutes and the pace falling off a cliff. But I do eventually get there… just a bit more wincingly than I’d like.
In the end, I wound up doing 12 miles, a bit more than the 19K if only because I wasn’t sure how best to hit 11.8061 miles. I suppose I could have switched my Garmin watch to kilometers but the way things have been going, any time I try and do something lately it seems to backfire tremendously.
All this is just rambling prelude to say 2019 may bring more of the same with an effort to try and do better.
My stats over at marathonguide.com are a blank page for 2019… and that will change come Saturday with the first marathon of the year. But until then, I raise a post-run glass to the new year.
Fun Fact: That’s blue Powerade Zero doubling as Romulan Ale for those wondering about the behind the scenes magic of Run Kevin Run Dot Com.
Today’s in the books… now it’s on to tomorrow’s run! The goal? The same as every day in 2019:
