Southwest Series – Day 3 – Mesquite, NV Day 2

Run. Eat. Sleep. Repeat.

Mesquite, NV, Day 2… or Southwest Series Day 3… or runcation race day 5… or runcation race 6…

I slept terribly last night. You’d think after the miles I’d be able to collapse and lose some hours to Queen Mab. But amidst tossing and turning and clock watching I’m not sure how much was sleep and how much was just… time passing.

I watched THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI last night which perhaps contributed to the spiraling night. A dark and twisty film noir, I wanted to revisit it after reading William Castle’s autobiography (Castle, the gimmick horror king, was an associate producer for Welles on the project).

Arthur Bannister, Criminal Lawyer: You’ve been traveling around the world too much to find out anything about it..

But as it’s almost 5 AM, I’m packing up the car and headed once more to the 14 loop course. I figure at this point I can run the thing on autopilot as I’ve been there, done that, got the state medal already… as always though I’ll look to keep it under 4 hours.

I’m a glutton and a fool…

Michael O’Hara: When I start out to make a fool of myself there’s very little can stop me.

Second verse, same as the first! Since the 14 loops today were the same 14 loops as yesterday, I tried to snap a few pics with the Mainly Marathon “Mainlyners” and regulars. I missed a lot of folks but here are a few of the people I did grab a quick photo of while on the run.

Oh, and I think I was the first marathoner to finish today, pulling out a time of 3:26:43.

I should point out that my grand scheme to try and move the weight scale slider down 15 pounds is complicated by the abundant and delicious food offerings at Mainly Marathon events. These no-bake chocolate cookies are like caloric Kryptonite for me and I could scarf them down like the overweight kid in a no-bake cookie factory I sometimes am.

Adding to this was my own failings on the 3 hour drive from Mesquite to Bull Head, Arizona, for the next part of the Southwest Series. Despite yet another animal style burger and fries from In-N-Out, I found myself craving food as I drove. I scrounged around and am ashamed to say I tore into the high calorie junk recovery foods offered by runDisney post Avengers on Sunday. Potato chips, cookies, trail mix – I ripped open bags and stuffed my face. Not my finest hour. One doesn’t always find truth on the internet which is why I strive for at least a semblance of honesty on RKR.com.

I originally posted the above race day shots to Facebook. I’m struggling to upload them to my site however. The weird space-time continuum paradox I’ve created is that by the time I DO publish this post, the photos WILL be uploaded. But as I’m writing this it’s almost impossible. It messes with One’s head… the same way these photos are from Mesquite Day 2 even though that’s Southwest Series Day 3.

I’m sitting in my hotel room in Laughlin, NV. I really only know this town as the setting for a failed CBS musical tv show that occasionally costarred producer Hugh Jackman. It was called “Viva Laughlin” and I think lasted all of two or three episodes years ago.

The hotel I’m at wants $4.95 for a 24 hour internet passcode. I’m much too cheap to pay that so as I sit here, I’m also too tight with my cell phone data plan to try and upload images… hence the aforementioned photo paradox that could “cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the spacetime continuum and destroy the entire universe! Granted, that’s a worst-case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localised, limited to merely our own galaxy.” Or so Doc Brown postulates in Back to the Future Part II.

So I’m hunting for free wifi in this desert gambling town. Do I feel lucky? Well, do I?
