October 24, 2016 – A Day Without Time

I tried writing this entry four or five times on my long haul flight back from Venice. Each draft was successively worse and ultimately I’ve decided to do a short-short version here:

The flight from Venice to Philadelphia was a 9.5 hour ordeal, one of those trips that just doesn’t seem to end. It wasn’t bad, just felt interminable. We had some delays here and there so my layover in Philly was cut short and I had to rush from immigration/customs to another terminal and catch my just boarding flight out. That flight was plagued with issues. About two and a half hours in, the pilot announced none of the lavatories were working so he had to make an emergency landing in Albuquerque. About an hour after that, we land and they get things, um, sorted, and we wait for a slot in air traffic control to take off again. We finally get to our destination and sit on the tarmac for close to an hour waiting for a gate to open.

It was a long, long day and I’m baffled and confused by jetlag. I didn’t run today. Perhaps I should have clicked a few k’s this morning before hopping the bus to Marco Polo Airport. It might have helped my mood. I’m still sore today but actually more from the SpaceRock Trail fail than from yesterday’s marathon. My knee is still tender to the slightest touch, including anytime it grazes the denim of my jeans. But given that I just logged 42.195 KM yesterday, I can only hope I recover as relatively easily when I embark on the Southwest Series in a few weeks.
