The Space Coast Marathon – Pre-Launch Logistics

This feels incredibly strange to be typing as a new Covid variant has been identified. But I’m supposed to be running another marathon this weekend… and this time in the science-denying state of Florida.

The packet pickup wasn’t sufficiently masked for my tastes… but what can one expect here in my home state? Don’t blame me — I didn’t vote for DeSantis.

As part of the race organizers’ Covid strategy, they handed out our medals at pickup… which makes me wonder how many folks will opt to go “virtual” on the day. This is one of my favorite races, a very flat and fast course… even if I haven’t been so fast recently. So I’m looking forward to running it… I just wish I felt more confident not only in myself but in the world.

My big takeaway from the latest mutation of the virus is that we need more information before we completely freak out… but we also need to be vigilant and cautious when it comes to hand washing, mask wearing, and potential super spreader events.

And I realize the hypocrisy of this as I plan on running a marathon with a bunch of other people in close proximity. Not like this thing spreads through such activity, amirite? At least not here in Florida, right, DeSantis?

Sigh. I’ll be masked. I’ll be washing my hands. And I’ll be running as fast as I can to stay was far away from folks as I can.

Stay safe, everybody. Stay positive. But don’t TEST positive.

Obviously, test if you think you might have been exposed… but I’m hoping the results are negative.

I don’t know.  It’s a messed up world and we just have to do our best.  And a rest of the world best, not a Florida best, ya know what I mean?
