January 10, 2021 – A Dopey Finish

Sometimes running really is dopey. Today was the day I needed to do my virtual marathon for the Dopey Challenge… and I was less dopey and much more grumpy. It was chilly in the AM and I was hesitant to get out the door. But when you commit to something you try and follow through, no matter the roadblocks. Or so I want to believe.

It was a boring, brrr-ing run and I just wasn’t really in the mood for it. Too many of the same loops I’ve been running the past few days, just for longer stretches or greater iterations of loop-de-looping. Unlike the in real life events where occasionally they swap out our famous Disney friends along the course, such that one day it might be Dark Wing Duck and the other it could be Wreck It Ralph, this was just the same old, same old. That duck might have been new. Nah, same duckin’ duck.

Anyhoo, I was distracted by thoughts of DC and Covid and just life in general… but at least I got through it. I’m certainly not in tip top form but at least I’m lumbering through the miles and letting the knee brace do its thing to minimize the risk of doing more harm than good on the run. To be honest though the physical harm pales in comparison to the mental strain in NOT running. Even today which was kind of a bust for “running.” it was better to have run than not to have run at all.

That “Happy” smile — don’t believe it.  I was sore and slouchy, achy and perhaps most tellingly I was the eighth dwarf, “Fakey.”

Herein ends the Walt Disney World Virtual Dopey Challenge. May 2022 see us return to the magical grounds of the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Center, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.

But first we really need to get this covid surge under control. The insurrection at the Capitol was certainly of paramount import… but it overshadowed the increasingly rising new records of Covid cases and deaths. In many ways, the two strains of American shame are forever intertwined. I sincerely hope we soon see massive improvements, with a greater reliance on science, facts, humanity, empathy, and care.
