“To run or not to run…” it’s a question I find myself wrestling with more and more… during the week. But the weekend? The weekend is for racing. And this weekend is no exception. I’ve registered for the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City, MI. I’ve prepaid airfare and hotel, prebooked a rental car. So I’m going to go. But I have had doubts about running it.
I’m still struggling with this annoying sinus infection thing. I’m on round three of antibiotics, added in steroids to the drug cocktail, and then the other day I had a sharp stabbing chronic pain in my lower back. But my foot is no longer bothering me so that’s a plus.
Friends and family have all been gently suggesting I should skip this one. But the problem for me is that this was my big second moonshot attempt for a sub-3 hour race. I got my unexpected PR at this race last year courtesy of Reddi Wip(TM) and good conditions. And so the plan was to really go for it this year… a plan sabotaged by the aforementioned illnesses and a distressing weight gain. Given the moonshot seems impossible, there’s a string argument to be made for scrubbing the mission and saving my rocket fuel for Kilimanjaro in June.
And yet, “to run or not to run…?”
I’m at the airport now, winging my way to Michigan.
The back pain has subsided; it no longer feels as if someone cut out my kidney in the middle of the night and left me in a bathtub of quickly melting ice.
My voice is back to its normal timber, albeit I’m still a bit sniffily.
I’ve eaten far too much recently so could use a 26.2 mile calorie burn.
“To run or not to run?”
Probably a sucker’s bet.
