Travel Day and Weather Forecasts

Well, crap. It looks like it’s going to rain for my race tomorrow.

I guess it could be worse; I could be running in Washington, DC.

I’m just about to get into the car and drive the 6 hours+ to the San Francisco area. The Crystal Springs Trail Marathon is held rain or shine and it looks like it’s going to be rain. Which probably means mud. Which probably means I should assume this might be the last time I wear the shoes I’m bringing to run in.

On the plus side, I’m viewing it as a training run for Antarctica in case it’s in the 40s there. Supposedly we actually WANT the temperatures at the end of the earth to be colder than that so the “summer” months maintain mostly packed dirt trails for the course. If it is above freezing, the ice melts and you’re slogging through mud there too. If that’s the case, we’ve been warned that the mud is like a shoe sucking ooze.

Come what may, I’ll lace up my shoes extra tight and go the distance. Because whatever happens during the race itself, it’s always fun to have done the event. Sure, sure… the doing can suck sometimes, but the “having done” more than makes up for any adversities. And sometimes, the adversities make the finish even sweeter.

Or so I keep telling myself.

Again, at least I’m not dealing with this:
