I had set my alarm for 5:07 am. I wanted to try and get a run in before heading to the airport. The Radar sound reverberated out of the tiny iPhone speaker and… well, I ignored it. My legs are sore, I’m still stuffy and it was a marginally late night walking back from the Hollywood Bowl the previous evening.
And so I didn’t run. This is not the way to resolve the 20+ pound overage on my frame. It is not the way to address lingering depression and regret. But it was what happened.
I’m once again on a plane. I had been kicking myself for detouring back to LA right up until the music started and the lights were lit for the live action Muppet Show. I had a lot of regrets as I sat down fifty minutes before showtime. The patrons around me were typically horrible. One woman in particular bugged the hell out of me. She was lecturing her companions on how Americans have no idea how to behave at concerts, prattling on in a faux Zsa Zsa Gabor accent that she grew up in Budapest and saying that the Europeans know not to applaud between movements of an orchestral piece. She name dropped how she knew LA Philharmonic’s Dudavof yet here she was sitting seven rows from the top of the bowl, section W1. I could have abided all that with a bit tongue but when the show started and she continued talking to her fellow bowlgoers I wanted to turn around and tell her that I guess Europeans must also know how to behave with ironic hypocrisy at concerts. But coward that I am, I just grumbled under my breath and shot back stink eye glances. Passive aggressive, that’s how I roll.
The Muppets themselves though were a legitimate delight, the best use of Jim Henson’s creations in years, save for the recently installed Great Moments in History vignettes outside the Hall of Presidents in Walt Disney World. I was tremendously glad I endured the crazed travel schedule, though a little sad to not have anyone to share the moment with me… besides of course Countess Ms Chatterbox. The show itself reminded me of seeing Pee Wee’s Playhouse Live at the Nokia Theater years ago. That show went to Broadway. With a few minor tweaks, Disney could easily have the Muppets Take Manhattan for sure.
Forty hours after landing in LA post Northwest Series, I’m now headed to start the next Mainly Marathon event. I’m meeting up with one of my classic Table 44 shipmates from the DCL Wonder. Kerry is great and it’ll be good to catch up with her in person. It will also enable me to break up the long trip to Baker, MT, the site of the first day of this year’s Center of the Nation six race series.
