August 22, 2016 – Twenty Minutes Into The Future

Kevin’s Note: I had written half of a post for today on my Delta flights home. But ultimately most of that should be jettisoned and used only for my complaint email to that airline. Instead, here’s a short-short version update:

3:45 AM — I wake up and realize I had set my 3:30 alarm for PM, not AM
3:50 AM — I take a shower. Mom gets emails from Delta saying our 8:05 AM flight is delayed 2 hours
3:55 AM — I’m showered and packed. Mom tells me about the delay. We both agree it’s silly to try and reschedule the airport transport pickup so we opt to just stick with our 4:30 AM shuttle
4:15 AM — we grab a croissant from the front desk and catch up with a few fellow TravellingFit runners who also have early flights.
6:05 AM — we arrive at KEF and Mom gets another email saying we’ve been rebooked on our connecting flight for 15 minutes later… and an additional 3 hour layover in Atlanta.
6:20 AM — we check in our bags and get our boarding passes… not for the supposed rebooked connecting flight but our original direct flight connection to Orlando. No one knows what’s going on.
7:30 AM — we bump into a few more TravellingFit folks on their way to their respective next stops — some off on another adventure, some headed home.,
9:55 AM — we board our flight to MSP.

We fly back to the United States of America. I watch Assassination Classroom 2. It’s disappointing.

12:02 PM — we land in MSP.
12:07 PM — I get a text message saying Delta has rebooked us onto the 1:15 PM flight.
12:20 PM — We go through customs and immigration and recheck our luggage. No one has any boarding passes for us and we’re told to go to our original direct flight that has been delayed until 1:15 PM.
1:10 PM — we board our direct flight to MCO. As the door is about to close, I get an updated text message saying our flight from Atlanta is delayed.
5:19 PM — we land in Orlando. I get two text messages from Delta — one saying welcome to Orlando and I can pick up my luggage on Carousel 31. The second says my Atlanta connecting flight is boarding on-time now at 6:15 PM.
5:39 PM — thanks to Delta’s 20 minute baggage policy, we get our bags and head for the shuttle to our car in the Park Me Fly parking lot.
6:11 PM — we’re at our car and headed out of the airport, leaving the Delta snafus behind.

Ah, travel. It’s glamorous, ain’t it? On the plus side, once you get to where you’re going it, be it your home or a land of adventure, there’s lots to enjoy. But the flying there? It stinks. This is why my Mom always says, “if only we could get a Star Trek transporter…”

8:05 PM — I agree with Mom.

8:07 PM — it’s still 90+ degrees out.  I decide against a recovery run, opting to set my alarm for the AM tomorrow.  Not quite 3:30 AM early, but early enough to try and beat some of the heat.

Tomorrow I run again.  And I’ll try and get the prior days’ posts sorted with photos and whatnot.  After all, tomorrow is another day.
