September 25, 2018 – Coping with Copenhagen

I spent the day on walking tours. A 3-hour grand tour, a 90 minute Royalty Tour, and a 90 minute Classical Tour. We covered a lot of ground, both historically, anecdotally, and city-ly. I’ve seen the majority of what there is to see from the outside looking in at least of Copenhagen. And my initial reaction is that of all the cities I’ve hit this trip, this is by far the best.

I couldn’t deal with the winters with its cold and early sunsets, but today was a nearly perfect day to be walking around — just windy and chilly enough in the shade to require a sweatshirt and jacket (all the layers I brought with me) and sunny enough to be warm enough to enjoy the sun’s rays by unzipping the coat. Because tomorrow’s forecast is dark and dreary, I took the opportunity to see as much as I could in the sun.

As a result though, I think tomorrow I may be sitting in a cafe, nursing a beverage, and translating most of the day’s information I tried to tap into my phone as my guides spoke. It’s all Kevin-short-hand at the moment, which may prove as inscrutable to me tomorrow as it would be to you today… but by then we’d both just be in the same boat and if the ship goes down, we might as well all go down together.

Plus, I’m a bit knackered from the wind, the walk, and most of all the Danish food I opted for at dinner. I wound up with a stew that was good, if a bit bland for my tastes.

But it was very, very heavy and filling and food-coma inducing. I’m not sure the Danes have a word for light, low-cal, or non-arterial-blocking. But I haven’t checked Google Translate so don’t quote me on that.

Oh, and in my defense – they didn’t have any tables so sat me at the bar. Only the wine and the water shot glass chaser are mine; the bottles of beer are just for display… or maybe I was blocking the server from getting them. I did feel awfully in the way where they sat me.

And so, as my distended stomach gurgles in over-foodedness, my body and soul struggles to reconcile time and space and meaning, I’ll leave you with this small teaser:

Today I saw the final item on the Top 3 Most Disappointing Tourist Attractions in Europe, as voted by various tour guides I’ve had in Europe over the years… and as I’ve consistently been told that it is these same three, I have to say it’s almost unanimously agreed that these are the three. It’s not like different lists for different people — no, these are the three. I have previously seen two., and today I saw the third. What are they? Tune in tomorrow.
