August 29, 2017 – A John Frankenheimer Film: The Guangzhou Layover Part II

I wish I felt better.

And I really wish I had availed myself of the free hotel on my layover TO Bali as well. Maybe I could’ve avoided that Chevy Chase as Gerald Ford stair fall.

To be frank, I thought the hotel was connected to the airport and I would therefore not be able to leave to sightsee if I took that option. Turns out, no, they have a series of hotels throughout the city. They also give you a free one-day metro card, a free ticket to the hop on/hop off bus and more. If I felt better, I’d certainly be loving the gratis tour of Guangzhou.

Thus while I’m not taking full advantage, I have grabbed the metro down to Canton Tower/Guangzhou Tower. I hear it’s the tourist attraction in Guangzhou.

In reality, it’s just a big tower. There’s apparently an observation deck but… meh. And if you frame it right, it kinda looks like I’m Godzilla-Ing it!

This whole Guangzhou layover experience underscores the difference between quantity of miles logged and quality of miles. I’ve got a robust frequent flier mileage account but I am once again reminded of how incredibly naive I am when it comes to travel.

Oh! This cartoon caricature metro card is surprisingly accurate in its depiction of the Guangzhou subway.
