Stockholm Marathon – Preflight Checks

Bags are packed (mostly).

Boarding pass is printed… albeit apparently there’s a plane change that did NOT appear on my ticket. I guess if I did the math I would’ve known something was afoot, but it was surreal to see this pop-up at Delta.com when I got my seat assignment:

I’ve checked the weather — it’s gonna be a little colder than here in Orlando. But the race itself is on Saturday in Stockholm… and doesn’t start until 12 noon. So good temps for running and before the rain… but sightseeing on Sunday might be a bit wet. Might make for a perfect excuse to hang out in a pub.

I should note the race website has a page titled, “Stockholm – the Capital of Scandinavia.”

Here’s a screengrab:

I wonder how Norway and Denmark feel about Stockholm’s claim?  According to Wikipedia, “Scandanavia” as a geographic term it almost always includes Sweden and Norway. But if you expand the definition to a linguistic meaning, namely to encompass places that speak Scandanavian languages, Denmark has to be included.

As for Finalnd? Well…

“The Scandinavian Peninsula is a large peninsula reaching west from northern Europe over the north side of the Baltic Sea. Norway, Sweden and some of Finland are on this peninsula. However, Denmark, but not Finland, is seen as part of Scandinavia in the ethic sense. This is because Danish is a Scandinavian language but Finnish is not.”

I say again, I wonder how Norway and Denmark feel about the Swedish claim on the capital of Scandinavia?

The internet says it’s as rife a rivalry as who invented the ice cream sundae or the hamburger.

Whatever the validity of their moniker, Stockholm awaits.
